Throwback Thursday- Janette Oke
I had not thought of these books in a while until a friend from Jr. High posted a picture of them. I used to love reading Janette Oke books! They were all about Christian romance back in the day on the prairie.
In the Love Comes Softly series, Marty is headed to the pioneer West when her husband dies, leaving her pregnant and alone. A widower Clark, offers a marriage of convenience to her- she will do the cooking, cleaning, and help raise his daughter and he will provide for her. Of course, the two end up falling in love and the books that follow chronicle their lives together.
Oke also has a similar series titled Women of the West, but the books can also be read alone. One of my favorites was Roses for Mama, in which a young girl is left to raise her siblings alone. I also remember reading A Bride for Donovan, where a farmer in the West orders a mail-order bride from overseas.
Did you know a lot of these books were also made into movies for TV? The first Love Comes Softly movies stars Katherine Heigel! I’m not really into historical fiction any more, but I sure remember loving these books. They taught me a lot about the history of the time and all that the women of the West had to face.
