A WONDERFUL WITTY NEW SERIES

FROM ONE OF BRITAIN’S FUNNIEST NOVELISTS

Wendy Holden, the Sunday Times No 1 bestseller, is back with a new publisher, Head of Zeus, and a sparkling new series of social satires. The first is about fashionable weddings.

At the heart of the new series is a compelling new character readers will love: an ingenious and resourceful heroine destined for great things.

Laura Lake longs to be a journalist. For now she’s an unpaid intern at a glossy magazine – sleeping secretly in the fashion cupboard and living on canapés. But hey, you have to start somewhere. And she’s just got her first big break – to infiltrate three society weddings and write a juicy expose.

Security will be tighter than a bodycon dress, but how hard can it be to get the skinny? She’ll disguise herself as a ballgowned billionheiress for the castle-partying aristocrats and a boho-chic pixie child for the posh festival nuptials. Oh, and a moustachioed lobster for the Shoreditch hipsters.

But nothing can prepare her for disappearing brides, raunchy royals and a brush with the next James Bond. Or the fact that her jealous office enemy will do anything to bring her down. Will Laura get the scoop of the year? Or will she be out on her ear?

ABOUT WENDY

Number one bestselling author Wendy Holden was a journalist on Tatler, the Sunday Times, and The Mail on Sunday before becoming an author. She has since written ten consecutive Sunday Times top-ten bestsellers. She lives in Derbyshire.

My Review

I was given a copy of this book and am voluntarily reviewing it. 3 out of 5 stars overall. Wow! Let me just begin by saying that there are some crazy, crazy trends in upscale British weddings apparently! Laura Lake first begins by being a living piece of art for a modern-day artist trying to make a statement. Eventually, she gets a job as a magazine intern. One of her first assignments is coming along to interview the ridiculously wealthy and shallow Lulu. Laura ends up feeling sorry for the way Lulu is portrayed and helps her sound better in the interview. The descriptions of Lulu’s house were insane! Laura thinks she’s gotten her lucky break when she is assigned to cover hipster weddings, but her old school nemesis, Clemency, is out to get her. Laura ends up attending three weddings. One is for that crazy artist she worked for and takes place partially in public restrooms. Another involves pagan ceremonies with hired actors being earth, air, fire, and water. The third wedding is your typical, high-scale royal wedding. As Laura attends these weddings, she stumbles upon a mystery AND a love interest or two.

Despite the setbacks she encounters, Laura doesn’t give up. She is a likeable character who cares about others. She meets some really interesting characters along the way. There is the shallow, but sweet, Lulu who is sickeningly wealthy. Lulu has a transgender, ex-military, make-up artist butler named Vlad.  Laura’s fashion bosses at the magazine are similar to Lulu in that they’re clueless, but kind. They also have some really off-the-wall ideas. Laura has two love interests- Caspar, who is funny and entertaining, but doesn’t have much substance and Harry, who is a serious journalist and a fan of Laura’s father (a deceased journalist).

I really got a glimpse into another world with these crazy weddings. Laura gets herself into some hilarious situations in this book! This is a very entertaining read for people interested in “how the other half lives.” I would recommend this to fans of comedy, fashion, celebrities, and chick lit!

Book Review

A huge thanks to Libby Kirsch for sending me her latest novel! I am reviewing it voluntarily. I have loved Stella Reynolds from book one and this latest installment was no exception. We get to see the return of many fun, big personalities like Janet, John, and Lucky. Stella catches a suspect’s confession on camera, but an anonymous email convinces her to keep digging. While she tries to figure out the case, she discovers the FBI has taken an interest in her. Meanwhile, a third party is threatening Stella if she doesn’t drop her investigation. The more Stella digs, the more layers she uncovers and she finds that corruption goes deeper than she ever expected. I love how Kirsch’s novels really lay out the investigation clearly, while still leaving some surprises until the end. The danger and mystery is interspersed with hilarious antics. Stella feels like a real person with flaws who makes mistakes, but she still kicks booty. The book ended with an idea of where Stella will be in the next story and I can’t wait to read it and find out what happens!

The Big Lead Book Review

By: Libby Kirsch

Genre: chick lit, mystery, cozy mystery

(Picture provided by the awesome author) I was given this book in exchange for an honest review. I really enjoyed reading this exciting novel! It was chick flick meets romance meets mystery meets career girl looking for her big break! Stella Reynolds is headed to tiny Bozeman to start her first journalism job after graduation. She ends up meeting some interesting characters, like a permanent motel resident named Janet. She also meets the handsome and charming John, who works for a competing news team. In the midst of getting settled, Stella discovers a huge corruption scandal and she and her partner, Vindi, must expose it quickly, as they are becoming targets!

I liked Stella a lot and could relate to her wanting to do big things and get her big break. I loved all the detail about working in news and that made sense when I saw the author’s background (she was an investigative reporter). I thought the secondary characters, especially the quirky ones, really added to the story. Life can get crazy in a small town! I liked John, although he seemed a little too love-at-first-sight to be real.

The mystery in this story was great as well. I liked following it along with Stella and figuring out some things before her (but nothing was too obvious). As I got near the end of the story, I had to keep reading to find out what happened next! When I read the preview to the sequel, I knew I had to pick that book up as quickly as possible! I am definitely attached to Stella and her little news station and would highly recommend this story to fans of chick lit or mystery, and especially to fans of both!
