An Event to Remember… or Forget

An Event to Remember… or Forget

By Melissa Baldwin

Genre: Chick lit, British chick lit

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this book that I picked up on a whim. Maybe it’s because one of my dream jobs would be event planning? Sienna is an event planner soon to leave her current company and start her own one. She’s mostly happy with her boyfriend, Luke, although he always puts his career first. One night, she and Luke run into his old roommate, Ace. Sienna can’t deny the attraction she feels to save, especially when they keep running into each other. In the meantime, Sienna’s friends are getting pregnant and engaged, making her wonder where he relationship with Luke is headed.

This was just such a fun read. Sienna is a likable main character and I loved reading about her job. The book did have some awkward, stilted sentences. Not the most polished writing style, but a good plot and characters. I would definitely recommend it to chick lit fans!

My Review

Oh my goodness, I enjoyed this book! 5 out of 5 chickadees singing! Gemma is such a sweet and relatable main character. I feel like so many young women have felt the way that she does at points throughout the book. This book is also hilarious. Gemma gets herself into some crazy situations and has a funny “inner voice.”  Just reading about the lives of Youtube stars had me feeling incredulous. I learned SO MUCH about people who make a living vlogging. That brings up another great thing about this book- it’s very “of the moment.” From clickbait articles to ring lights, RIGHT NOW is the perfect time to read this book. It revealed a side of the internet I had never paid much attention to before. This book is a great example of fun chick lit. I highly recommend it!

The Carlton Square Series

The Carlton Square Series

I am so excited to share The Carlton Square series with you guys! This was written by one of my favorite authors, Lilly Bartlett, AKA Michelle Gorman. I have already read both books and the second just hit shelves in the USA. Check out my reviews below!

The Big Little Wedding in Carlton Square

Quote 1 for bloggers USQuote 2 for bloggers US

I enjoyed this fun book. Thinking it over to critique it, I realized I really had no complaints. Sometimes chick lit books are predictable, over dramatic, and cheesy, but this book was none of those things. This is the story of Emma and Daniel planning their wedding. He was born with a silver spoon in his mouth and she, well… wasn’t. Daniel’s parents are expecting a huge, elegant ceremony and are willing to contribute financially, but Emma’s father won’t hear of it. Emma has to pull off an almost royal wedding on a shoestring budget.

This book took me back to my own wedding planning days, which was fun. I also loved both main characters. Emma is desperately trying not to betray where she comes from, even though she’s marrying into something else. Daniel is clueless about his privilege. The secondary characters were very entertaining, yet also heartwarming.

The plot moves along at a good pace. Emma has a funny “voice.” I am really excited to read more in this series! I would recommend it to any fan of chick lit, and really, anyone who has ever planned a wedding!

The Second Chance Cafe in Carlton Square

unnamed (1)unnamed (2)

This book was super cute, just like the first one in the series! Emma starts a cafe in Carlton Square to provide jobs for at-risk youth. She runs into a lot of trouble from a fellow cafe owner who is trying to run her out of business. She is also juggling a new job, her husband, and her twin toddlers!

I could relate to a lot of Emma’s thoughts about motherhood. Emma wants Daniel to step up more and feels like everything falls to her. I think that’s common and I like how it was handled in this story.

Emma is such a likable character. I love that she is trying to help at-risk youth and learned to overcome some prejudices she didn’t even know she had. We see the return of a lot of lovely characters, like her parents, her mother-in-law, Daniel, Kelly, etc. We also get lots of new characters from Emma’s mom group and the other people who frequent the cafe. I loved the diverse range of characters.

It was very enjoyable to visit Emma and her square again! The plot moved at a good pace and the story was well-done. I hope there’s a third book!

A Manor in Cornwell

A Manor in Cornwell

I reviewed two of Laura Brigg’s novellas here. Both books were about Julianne, who becomes a wedding coordinator in Cornwell. I’m excited to announce that another book in the series is coming out titled A Manor in Cornwell. Check out more information on the book below!

A Manor in Cornwall Cover Image

A Manor in Cornwall Blurb:

Now that Julianne’s happily ending is secure, her career as Cliffs House’s event planner is suddenly busier than ever. Thanks to a Cornish singing sensation’s upcoming concert at Cliffs House, and her promise to plan the perfect wedding for Pippa, Julianne hasn’t a moment to spare for Matthew or his plans for a weekend outing at Pencarrow. But she’s determined to find a way without letting down Ceffylgwyn for its big moment, or disappointing Pippa on the biggest day of her friend’s life.

With a starstruck crew of volunteers, a persistent American event planner, and a seemingly ill-chosen assistant in the form of the village’s former troublemaker, Julianne has her hands full, as usual. And it will take all of her friends, a few surprise twists, and — of course — her beloved Matthew to see her through it.

A WONDERFUL WITTY NEW SERIES

FROM ONE OF BRITAIN’S FUNNIEST NOVELISTS

Wendy Holden, the Sunday Times No 1 bestseller, is back with a new publisher, Head of Zeus, and a sparkling new series of social satires. The first is about fashionable weddings.

At the heart of the new series is a compelling new character readers will love: an ingenious and resourceful heroine destined for great things.

Laura Lake longs to be a journalist. For now she’s an unpaid intern at a glossy magazine – sleeping secretly in the fashion cupboard and living on canapés. But hey, you have to start somewhere. And she’s just got her first big break – to infiltrate three society weddings and write a juicy expose.

Security will be tighter than a bodycon dress, but how hard can it be to get the skinny? She’ll disguise herself as a ballgowned billionheiress for the castle-partying aristocrats and a boho-chic pixie child for the posh festival nuptials. Oh, and a moustachioed lobster for the Shoreditch hipsters.

But nothing can prepare her for disappearing brides, raunchy royals and a brush with the next James Bond. Or the fact that her jealous office enemy will do anything to bring her down. Will Laura get the scoop of the year? Or will she be out on her ear?

ABOUT WENDY

Number one bestselling author Wendy Holden was a journalist on Tatler, the Sunday Times, and The Mail on Sunday before becoming an author. She has since written ten consecutive Sunday Times top-ten bestsellers. She lives in Derbyshire.

My Review

I was given a copy of this book and am voluntarily reviewing it. 3 out of 5 stars overall. Wow! Let me just begin by saying that there are some crazy, crazy trends in upscale British weddings apparently! Laura Lake first begins by being a living piece of art for a modern-day artist trying to make a statement. Eventually, she gets a job as a magazine intern. One of her first assignments is coming along to interview the ridiculously wealthy and shallow Lulu. Laura ends up feeling sorry for the way Lulu is portrayed and helps her sound better in the interview. The descriptions of Lulu’s house were insane! Laura thinks she’s gotten her lucky break when she is assigned to cover hipster weddings, but her old school nemesis, Clemency, is out to get her. Laura ends up attending three weddings. One is for that crazy artist she worked for and takes place partially in public restrooms. Another involves pagan ceremonies with hired actors being earth, air, fire, and water. The third wedding is your typical, high-scale royal wedding. As Laura attends these weddings, she stumbles upon a mystery AND a love interest or two.

Despite the setbacks she encounters, Laura doesn’t give up. She is a likeable character who cares about others. She meets some really interesting characters along the way. There is the shallow, but sweet, Lulu who is sickeningly wealthy. Lulu has a transgender, ex-military, make-up artist butler named Vlad.  Laura’s fashion bosses at the magazine are similar to Lulu in that they’re clueless, but kind. They also have some really off-the-wall ideas. Laura has two love interests- Caspar, who is funny and entertaining, but doesn’t have much substance and Harry, who is a serious journalist and a fan of Laura’s father (a deceased journalist).

I really got a glimpse into another world with these crazy weddings. Laura gets herself into some hilarious situations in this book! This is a very entertaining read for people interested in “how the other half lives.” I would recommend this to fans of comedy, fashion, celebrities, and chick lit!
