Someday, Someday, Maybe Book Review

Someday, Someday, Maybe

By Lauren Graham

Genre: Women’s fiction, Chick Lit, Literary Fiction

4 out of 5 stars. I enjoyed this book! I wasn’t sure what to expect. Unlike many who are reviewing this book, I’m not a huge Lauren Graham fan. She’s been fine in what I’ve seen her in, but I don’t really have an opinion of her one way or the other. A few years ago, I kept seeing and hearing about this book, so I bought it. It’s been on the bookshelf for at least two years. I finally decided to read it, needing something light and cheery.

I found it funny that the book isn’t autobiographical, since it’s about an actress making it in the mid-nineties, but I can appreciate “writing about what you know about!” Franny was a likeable main character who has given herself a 3 year deadline to make it as an actress. We begin the book when she is 6 months away from that deadline. I also liked acting in Jr. High and high school, so I thought it was fun to read about the field. It was interesting to hear about the audition process. I also thought it was creative that the story is intermixed with entries from Franny’s filofax (what I would call a planner), although I sometimes had trouble reading the handwriting on them!

Franny lives with her best friend, Jane, and an aspiring screenwriter named Dan. They both play important parts in the story, as do her acting class friends- one of whom is a successful hottie. The plot was predictable “chick lit” at times, but Graham herself pokes a little bit of fun at it near the end of the book, when Franny and Dan see and discuss a “chick flick” movie.

The book ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, which drives me crazy! In the interview at the end of the book, Graham mentions “the next book,” but I haven’t found any other evidence of a sequel. When and if there is one, I will quickly snatch it up because I really would like to find out more about how Franny ends up! If you’re at all interested in “show business,” you’ll enjoy this book!
