Man Crush Monday

Hey, y’all! It is time for Man Crush Monday, the day when the internets are abuzz with girls plastering pics of their heartthrobs on Instagram and Twitter. Only here at ChickLitChickadees, we do things a little differently. Rather than post half naked photos of famous celebrities who are DBags in real life, we give a shout out to our favorite male literary characters.

This week’s ManCrushMonday is Richard Campbell Gansey III, aka “Gansey,” from Maggie Stiefvater’s The Raven Boys. Even though it has been awhile since I’ve read this book, I still remember the swoony male lead character.

Gansey is striking, charismatic, and bright. Obsessed with finding the truth behind the legends surrounding a dead Welsh King, he lands in Virginia, where he becomes a student at the prestigious Aglionby Academy. There, he becomes the leader among a group of guys (who are all crush-worthy themselves!) and they embark on the intriguing and sometimes dangerous mission alongside the female main character, Blue.

Several things stick out in my mind that make Gansey so kick-butt amazing. First is his intelligence. Smart guys are sexy! The book where he collected his research and notes was meticulous and well thought out. The planning and plotting involved to execute his quest involved analytical skills and deductive reasoning. His historical interest and knowledge seriously made my nerdy heart skip a beat, and was one of the main reasons Gansey earned a spotlight on ManCrushMonday!

Second is his magnetism. Gansey is a leader, and his charisma draws people in. Sure, he’s flawed. I’m not saying he’s perfect or one hundred percent worthy of this position, all I’m saying is that it takes a certain amount of confidence and integrity to lead.

Finally, he is dedicated. Well, actually, more like obsessed, but STILL! Whereas most wealthy kids are content to kick back and be apathetic, Gansey has passion. He is absolutely determined to discover what’s what about the dead king, Glendower. Despite obstacles in his path or disappointments in his past, he will stop at nothing to determine the truth. That kind of perseverance is admirable, and quite frankly, super hot!

For all of these reasons and more, Gansey is this week’s ManCrushMonday!
