Fab Five Friday! Stories that will Make You Ugly Cry

I am a crier. I cry during sappy rom coms, I cry when I see cute baby pictures, hell! I even cry during commercials. (Damn you Sarah McLachlan, ASPCA ad!)

With that in mind, it may come as no surprise that I often find myself reaching for a box of tissues while reading a really good book. Below, find some of my favorite books that brought on the waterworks.

Our date night watching "The Book Thief"!
Our date night watching “The Book Thief”!

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. I mean, the story takes place in a small German town during WWII told from DEATH’S PERSPECTIVE. Of course I sobbed. So did Elizabeth. Check out her review here . Also, because we’re masochists like that, we got together for date night with our husbands to watch the film version of the book. We were subsequently banned from picking movies for date nights.

Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin. Y’all have seen the picture plastered all over the internets… the one with a sticky tab for every death in the book. That series is sticky tabbed UP, lemme tell you! Some of those killings happen to be characters I cared deeply about, so yeah. Tears. Also, George R.R. Martin is a sadistic bastard.

pivot point

Pivot Point by Kasie West. I thought this was going to by a light, fluffy YA read, but NO! The seriously tough decision the main character makes in order to protect her best friend was HEARTBRAKING! I don’t want to share too much, because it is an upcoming review, but yes. I cried.

Looking for Alaska

Looking for Alaska by John Green. You may recall that this book nearly broke me. Forserious. I made the mistake of reading it at work, and there’s nothing worse than ugly crying at your desk.

anne of green gables

Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery. I love this classic tale! (Ok, yes, I’m biased when it comes to redheaded MC’s.) Do you guys remember that line from the movie, You’ve Got Mail? When Kathleen is closing down the store and the lady came in for the close out sale, and the shopper is crying? Remember? “You know, I came here every Saturday when I was a little girl. And I remember when your mother gave me Anne of Green Gables. ‘Read it with a box of Kleenex,’ she said; that’s what she told me.” Random. But this week’s Fab Five Friday theme triggered the quote, so I had to include Anne of Green Gables in the lineup!

  1. Yes, I ugly-cried in The Book Thief. I think the ugliest cry I ever performed was in Terms of Endearment. Ugh. My face looked like I had sunburn after that one.
