The Girl in the Mirror Review

The Girl in the Mirror

By Cathy Glass

Genre-Women’s fiction, true story

3 out of 5 singing chickadees!

Cathy Glass’s best books are tales of her fostering. Unfortunately, this story wasn’t that. This is the story of a young woman who used to stay at her aunt and uncle’s every summer and suddenly wasn’t allowed to go anymore. She goes back to the house for the first time in over 10 years to help nurse her dying grandfather. While there, pieces of her memory return to her until she finally remembers the horrific event.

This story could’ve been much shorter. There were a lot of unnecessary day-to-day details added in. That is pretty common in Glass’s books, but I don’t mind it as much in her fostering ones. The unnecessary details made the story move pretty slowly.

I liked the main character and thought the plot was interesting. It would’ve been better as a novella than a full-length novel. Definitely 3 out of 5 stars. Not bad, not great. An okay book.

Lessons in Laughing Out Loud Review

Lessons in Laughing Out Loud

By Rowan Colemen

Genre: Women’s fiction

4 out of 5 chickadees singing!

This was a great story. Willow has thrown herself into her job and doesn’t have much of a personal life. She purchases a magical pair of shoes secondhand that make her look and feel more attractive. Her former step-daughter shows up pregnant. She wants to stay with Willow. Willow is forced to confront and make peace with the past.

I love watching Willow’s character grow and develop in this book. It had a great message about not letting the past define you, but not burying it either. This was a heartwarming story, although it definitely discussed some serious topics as well.

The Big Weekend Review

The Big Weekend

By Libby Kirsch

Genre: Mystery, chick lit, cozy mystery

5 out of 5 chickadees singing!

I was given a copy of this book and am voluntarily reviewing it. I just love this Stella Reynolds series! This latest installment was so enjoyable. Stella reports on a murdered man. His ex-wife, Tabitha, is in jail for the crime, but she says she’s innocent and needs to get home to her kids. Is she telling the truth? As Stella investigates, she finds more and more layers. Soon, Tabitha’s brother is killed at her house. A neighbor swears she saw Tabitha commit both crimes, but Tabith was in jail during the second one. Does Tabitah’s lawyer have anything to do with what’s going on?

In the midst of the murder investigation, Stella is trying to keep her relationship with race car driver Lucky strong. That isn’t so easy when they’re long distance and both so committed to their jobs. Will Stella be able to figure out her love life and solve the case?

I liked the intricate layers to this mystery. I always love reading about Stella’s investigative process as well. We get to see a little bit of where Stella’s crazy friend, Janet, is. It looks like Janet is about to get her own series, which is exciting. I hope Libby keeps writing Stella Reynold’s books, too, because they’re great. This whole series is so enjoyable and I highly recommend them!

Poppy’s Proposal Review

Poppy’s Proposal

By Gavin Ough

Genre: Chick lot, romance, humor

4 out of 5 chickadees singing! I was given a copy of this book and am voluntarily reviewing it.

Finally, a chick lit that’s not completely predictable! Poppy works the front desk at a hotel and wonders if that’s all there will ever be for her. Poppy has always had a bit of a crush on surfer instructor Greg, but he shows no interest back. That is, until Poppy starts seeing Andrew, a wealthy royal. Poppy proposes to date both of them for a while and see what happens. Her roommate, Rhea, warns her not to, but she doesn’t listen.

For the first half of the book, I expected things to go one way in typical chick lit fashion. I was pleasantly surprised when they didn’t. This is a book with a lot of humor and a lot of heart. Poppy is a great main character people can relate to. The characters are all fun and incredibly different. I would definitely recommend Poppy’s Proposal to fans of chick lit.
