Waiting on Wednesday-The Rosie Effect

Waiting on Wednesday- The Rosie Effect

I haven’t read The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion yet, but it constantly shows up on my Goodreads recommendations AND sounds really cute. It was a nomination for our next book club read, but the fates chose another. The Rosie Project is about a socially challenged professor who sets out to see if he can find true love. He ends up meeting Rosie, who seeks his help finding her biological father.

The long-awaited sequel to The Rosie Project comes out on December 30, 2014!!!

Description from Amazon.com: “The highly anticipated sequel to the New York Times bestselling novel The Rosie Project, starring the same extraordinary couple now living in New York and unexpectedly expecting their first child. Get ready to fall in love all over again.

Don Tillman and Rosie Jarman are back. The Wife Project is complete, and Don and Rosie are happily married and living in New York. But they’re about to face a new challenge because— surprise!—Rosie is pregnant.

Don sets about learning the protocols of becoming a father, but his unusual research style gets him into trouble with the law. Fortunately his best friend Gene is on hand to offer advice: he’s left Claudia and moved in with Don and Rosie.

As Don tries to schedule time for pregnancy research, getting Gene and Claudia to reconcile, servicing the industrial refrigeration unit that occupies half his apartment, helping Dave the Baseball Fan save his business, and staying on the right side of Lydia the social worker, he almost misses the biggest problem of all: he might lose Rosie when she needs him the most.

Graeme Simsion first introduced these unforgettable characters in The Rosie Project, which NPR called “sparkling entertainment along the lines of Where’d You Go Bernadette and When Harry Met Sally.” The San Francisco Chronicle said, “sometimes you just need a smart love story that will make anyone, man or woman, laugh out loud.” If you were swept away by the book that’s captivated a million readers worldwide, you will love The Rosie Effect.”

Nicky Wells Christmas Tales

Nicky Wells Christmas Tales

I’m excited to announce we are doing a promo party with Brook Cottage Books for Nicky Wells short stories! I read “Christmas Spirits” and “Fairy Tale in New York” and they both helped get me into the holiday mood. They were very uplifting, sweet stories! Reviews are below. :)

Spirits of Christmas: A Rock ‘N Roll Christmas Carol Description

At one time, up-and-coming rock singer Jude had it all: a great band, a platinum record, a loving girlfriend. This Christmas, however, he is well down the road towards spontaneous self-destruction.

Unwitting at first, Jude has progressively alienated his band and driven away the love of his life. Tonight, the night before Christmas Eve, he has broken the final taboo during a disastrous gig. Yet Jude doesn’t see how badly his life has derailed, not until a ghostly procession of legends passes through his bedroom with a series of vivid and powerful wake-up calls.

Will the Spirits help Jude put the friendship, love, and rock music back into his Christmas?

Spirits of Christmas is a modern-day rock’n’roll adaption of Charles Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol. This novella will enchant romance readers, rock lovers, fans of ghost stories, and everybody who adores the festive season.

My Review

Three out of five chickadees singing! This book was provided to me for free as part of the book tour. This was a cute little version of “A Christmas Carol.” It centers around Jude, a fallen Rock ‘n Roll singer. He and his band, “The Blood Roses,” once went platinum, but Jude’s bad attitude and poor leadership have set the band back. He’s also been emotionally abusive to his girlfriend, Carrie. After screwing up majorly at a show, Jude goes home to find his girlfriend has left him without even a note.

You know the rest: Jude is visited by three ghosts who show him Christmas past, present, and future. Jude sees the error of his ways and turns everything around when he wakes up.

A cute story to get you in the holiday mood. It definitely adds some different twists to Dicken’s Christmas tale with the rock star theme. I wish you had a little more of Jude and Carrie’s background, but it is a short story! 3 stars.

Fairy Tale in New York Description

New York. A restaurant near Park Avenue. It’s early evening, and dusk is falling. So is the snow. Jude and Carrie are only killing time while they wait for their flight to London. They don’t know yet that their life will never be the same.

When rock star Jude gets stranded in New York with his family on Christmas Eve, he has no idea that he is setting in motion a chain of events that will turn their Christmas into the most magical one yet…

No good deed goes unpunished, or so it seems to Jude and Carrie on the morning of the twenty-fourth of December. The previous day, they gave up their London-bound flights to someone in crisis. And now, a spectacular whiteout is grounding all planes, and Jude, Carrie, and baby Maya are stuck far from home.

Tired, hungry, and just a little panicked, Jude loads his family into a cab and returns to their hotel. But there’s no room at the inn, and not even a platinum credit card will make a difference. Snow is falling heavily, and the family is facing a very bleak night indeed.

How do you celebrate Christmas with no place to stay, no food, and no presents? Join Jude, Carrie, Maya and a cast of colourful characters in this fairy tale story of Yuletide in New York.

Fairy Tale in New York is now available in Kindle and paperback editions from all Amazon domains, including: Amazon.co.uk | Amazon.com

My Review

4 out of 5 chickadees singing! I was provided this book as part of the book tour. I loved this cute story! We get to see Jude a year after his first Christmas book. He, Carrie, and baby Maya are at the airport ready to fly home after his band’s tour when they run into a man who desperately needs to get home for the birth of his premature baby. They decide to trade flights with him and stay another night in New York. He puts them up in a fancy hotel and its a fairy tale night, until the next day when the airport is closed due to a snowstorm! The hotel they previously stayed in is now full. What will they do, stranded in the “Big City?”

They definitely make the most of a bad situation, meet some new friends, and give back! I feel like we get to know Jude and Carrie more than we did in the first story. I loved the secondary characters, as well. They were really unique. It’s definitely an unpredictable story, I wouldn’t have guessed the “big event” at the end, but I loved it! I just loved all of their little adventures and how varied they were. I got sucked in and read it very quickly, wanting to know what would happen. This is truly a sweet, holiday tale of a good-hearted family.

Fab Five Friday – Favorite Places to Read

In the Bathtub. Nothing is better than coming home at the end of a long day, pouring myself a glass of crisp, white wine, and luxuriating in a bubble bath with a good romance novel.

At Work. I’m one of those lucky souls who, once all of her work is completed, is permitted to read on the job. That’s right. You read that correctly. I sometimes get PAID to READ. Don’t hate me.

In my library. When we first looked at renting our house, my husband and I fought over this room. I won. Now it’s my library, and I can curl up in the same chair my Namo rocked me in as a baby (seriously the comfiest chair on the face of the planet!), and read to my heart’s content.

At my Favorite Used Bookstore. Even though there are teetering towers of books everywhere, with very little semblance of order, I LOVE this place. It’s like my Disneyland.

At the Gym. This is less a statement of fact than it is a wish. I hate working out. I’m rarely at the gym. But I wish I worked out more, so maybe if I state it as fact, then it will come true.

What are your favorite places to read? Any different than mine?

Throwback Thursday – Charlotte’s Web

Did you know that when I was nine years old, I begged and pleaded and cried until my parents bought me a pet pig? True story!

His name is Toby, and he is no Wilbur, that’s for certain!

The tale of how a little girl named Fern, with the help of a friendly spider, saved her pig Wilbur from the usual fate of nice fat little pigs.

An affectionate pig named Wilbur befriends a spider named Charlotte, who lives in the rafters above his pen.

In this story of friendship, hardship, and the passing on into time, White reminds readers to open their eyes to the wonder and miracle found in the simplest of things.
